In a significant leap forward for national security, the UK is set to unveil a state-of-the-art facility designed to protect military assets from the growing threat of GPS jamming. Slated to open in 2026, this new test site—dubbed the ‘silent hangar’—will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe, reinforcing the UK’s defense capabilities against electronic warfare.
A Revolutionary Anti-Jamming Facility
The facility, which is being constructed at the Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down site in Wiltshire, represents a £20 million investment under a new contract awarded to QinetiQ. This cutting-edge radio frequency testing hangar will be large enough to accommodate the UK’s most formidable military assets, including Protector drones, Chinook helicopters, and F-35 fighter jets. With its advanced design, the hangar will create an environment ideal for testing equipment in some of the harshest electromagnetic conditions, ensuring that the UK’s military platforms can withstand the sophisticated jamming tactics increasingly used by hostile forces.
Innovative Features to Protect Against Modern Threats
Maria Eagle, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, emphasized the importance of this facility in the modern battlefield. "Hostile threats jamming GPS to disorientate military equipment have become increasingly common," she stated. "This cutting-edge test facility will help us eliminate vulnerabilities from our platforms, protect our national security, and keep our Armed Forces better protected on global deployments."
The silent hangar is designed to prevent any interference with surrounding users, including emergency services and air traffic control, while also preventing the escape of radio-frequency waves. Equipped with GPS simulators and threat emulators, it will allow the UK to create controlled hostile environments to rigorously test military equipment’s resilience against jamming and other electronic threats.
Boosting Local Economy and Expertise
In addition to enhancing national security, the facility is set to provide significant benefits to the local area around Boscombe Down. Over the next two years, it will create new job opportunities, contributing to the region’s economy and expanding the UK’s pool of electromagnetic expertise.
Will Blamey, Chief Executive of UK Defence at QinetiQ, highlighted the facility's critical role in modern warfare. "On an increasingly digital battlefield, the debilitating effects of electronic warfare are a persistent threat," he noted. "The testing we will conduct using this new facility will be integral to strengthening the resilience of military equipment, which in turn enhances the safety and security of our Armed Forces and the United Kingdom."
A Pioneering Facility with Global Implications
This facility isn’t just a milestone for the UK; it’s set to be one of the most advanced in the world. Richard Bloomfield, Head of Electronic Warfare (CBRN) Space at Defence Equipment & Support, emphasized its significance: "Not only will this be one of the largest such chambers in Europe, but it will also be one of the most up-to-date and high-tech in the world, where hostile environments can be safely recreated to put military equipment through its paces."
Beyond defense, the hangar is expected to offer opportunities for wider government use, industry collaboration, and critical national infrastructure testing. This initiative underscores the UK's commitment to maintaining a technological edge in defense while also safeguarding its forces and national interests against evolving global threats.
