Keysight Technologies has teamed up with Capgemini to advance the validation of 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) in both transparent and regenerative modes. This collaboration is set to enhance global connectivity by addressing the complexities of satellite-based 5G communication. A demonstration of this breakthrough was shown at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona last week.
Revolutionizing 5G NTN with Regenerative RAN Technology
Regenerative NTN RANs mark a major step forward in next-generation satellite communications, enabling signals to be processed directly within the satellite rather than relying solely on terrestrial infrastructure. This advancement improves signal quality, network reliability, and performance—a crucial aspect for low earth orbit (LEO) and non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) constellations.
Testing these networks presents unique challenges, including dynamic satellite movement, beamforming complexity, and seamless integration with terrestrial 5G infrastructure. Keysight is tackling these challenges with its UeSIM UE Emulation RAN solution, a cutting-edge technology that allows for large-scale NTN-enabled user device emulation. The solution integrates precise orbit channel modeling and NTN beam management, helping Capgemini successfully validate its 5G NR NTN RAN software across LEO, medium earth orbit (MEO), and geostationary earth orbit (GEO) constellations.
Industry Leaders Weigh In on the Innovation
Rajat Kapoor, Head of Software Frameworks at Capgemini Engineering, emphasized the importance of this validation, stating: "Capgemini's 5G NR NTN software framework, built on 3GPP Rel-17/18 and O-RAN standards, accelerates satellite-based communication system development. Validating interoperability with partners like Keysight is a crucial milestone in meeting the increasing demand for 5G NTN deployment."
Peng Cao, Vice President and General Manager of Keysight’s Wireless Test Group, highlighted the impact of NTN advancements on 5G connectivity, adding: "Validating regenerative NTN RANs is essential for the future of 5G, ensuring robust and high-quality communication across non-terrestrial networks. Our work with Capgemini is tackling the complexities of satellite communications, pushing the boundaries of 5G innovation."
Shaping the Future of 5G Satellite Communications
Keysight’s and Capgemini’s collaborative efforts are paving the way for more resilient and efficient satellite-based 5G networks, enabling faster deployment and seamless integration between terrestrial and non-terrestrial connectivity. As global reliance on 5G NTN solutions grows, this validation represents a critical step toward achieving truly ubiquitous coverage—from the ground to space.
