Avcom Develops Embedded Satellite Beacon Receiver Module for Signal Tracking and Spectrum Monitoring

Avcom of Virginia, Inc., a manufacturer of RF test and measurement equipment and embedded signal monitoring solutions for satellite and communication applications, has developed the BR-MOD-1-9-B embedded satellite beacon receiver module. This module has been developed for signal tracking in both mobile and fixed applications, with the added ability to operate as a spectrum analyzer when the receiver function is not in use. The BR-MOD-1-9-B is designed on a new platform for embedded applications requiring reliable operation.

The BR-MOD-1-9-B is designed to acquire and track CW satellite beacon carriers and BPSK-type signals, while also supporting DVB-like carriers using Carrier-Edge-Power-Tracking (CEPT). It provides a voltage output from 0 to 10 VDC proportional to the input signal, enabling signal monitoring within integrated systems. A distinguishing feature is that the unit can switch to a full-function spectrum analyzer when beacon tracking is not active, allowing systems to monitor carriers without requiring additional equipment.

The receiver supports on-the-move and fixed-site operation, with acquisition times of less than one second and user-selectable tracking and search rates. Detection bandwidth ranges from 10 to 750 kHz, with tracking bandwidth between 10 and 150 kHz. It supports CW, BPSK (no demodulation), and DVB carriers using CEPT tracking.

In terms of RF performance, the module operates across multiple frequency configurations, including 900-2200 MHz, 400-3000 MHz, and 70-6000 MHz options. It offers a maximum span width of 1300 MHz, tuning resolution down to 1 kHz, and resolution bandwidths from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. The unit has a maximum input power of -10 dBm, sensitivity of -100 dBm, and amplitude and frequency accuracy of ±1 dB and ±1 kHz respectively.

The device is designed for system integration, supporting communication via ethernet, USB, and serial interfaces. It is compatible with WEB-GUI, POSIX-C API, text-based API, and Avcom’s EVO GUI, enabling use in both complex monitoring and control systems and simpler embedded platforms. It also provides analog and digital outputs, including a 0–10 VDC signal strength indicator and configurable lock indicators.

Powered by an 8–33 VDC supply with consumption under 3 W, the module measures 3 inches by 3.5 inches by 1.062 inches and weighs 7.1 ounces. It is designed for operation in environments ranging from -40°C to 70°C, with storage down to -40°C and up to 85°C and supports operation at altitudes up to 40,000 feet. The BR-MOD-1-9-B is available in multiple configurations, including single and dual input options with SMA connectors, and different frequency ranges depending on system requirements.
