Pout      - Output Power of an RF Device

Pin         - Input Power of an RF Device

Power ratio is defined as the ratio of the output power to the input power of any RF system. This ratio is usually expressed in decibel unit for better data handling as decibel is a convenient unit for presenting minute or large ratios and the arithmetic operations are also simpler in this unit. In electrical and electronic engineering, we come across these power ratios very frequently and particularly when working with active microwave devices.

In RF active devices this ratio is termed as “gain” which is always >1. If this ratio is <1 it depicts loss which is also also useful in RF systems to "attenuate" power. When operating or analyzing devices like amplifiers or complex active systems like a complete Tx-Rx chain the input and output powers are given in watt which have to be converted to power ratios for easier calculation, that is where this calculator will be useful. Simply enter the output and input power values, and the conversion ratio will be computed.
