What are Klystron Tubes?

A Klystron is a vacuum tube that is used to oscillate and amplify microwave frequency signals. It uses the kinetic energy of an electron beam to produce radio frequency power. Low-power klystrons are used as oscillators and high-power klystrons are used as output tubes in the UHF frequency range.

Klystrons are used in a variety of radars, including weather, military, and air traffic control radars. They are also an important tool in particle physics research and are used as powerful sources of microwaves in particle accelerators to accelerate charged particles to high speeds for use in particle collision studies.

Klystrons are available with both RF connectors and waveguide interfaces with the latter being dominant for high-power applications.

Important parameters when looking for Klystrons:

  • Operating Frequency (Bands of Operation): Klystrons operate at various frequency ranges corresponding to different bands of operation. These bands include S-, X-, C-, L- Ka-, Ku- bands among others.
  • Output Power: It is the RF power produced by the klystron.
  • Gain: Gain is the measure of amplification provided by the klystron when it produces RF signals.
  • Waveguide Size: Waveguide cross-section is the size of the feed line for the signal to pass through. It is relative to the wavelength of the signal. Cross Section is represented as “WR” followed by a number. The ‘WR’ means rectangular and the number represents the size in inches.
  • Connector types: Klystrons are available in a large array of different connector types and brands which vary based on size, specifications, and individual product features.

everything RF has listed klystron tubes from the leading manufacturers on everything RF. Narrow down on klystron tubes based on frequency, output power, gain, interface and various other parameters.
