What are Low Noise Blocks?

A low noise block (LNB) is a device that is used to receive a signal from a satellite, down convert the frequency and amplify the signal for further processing. It is usually consists of a low noise amplifier, down converting mixer, local oscillator and an IF amplifier.

Low noise blocks are often fixed either in or on the satellite dish. They amplify microwave signals received from the satellite collected by the dish antenna in addition to amplifying the signal they also down convert high frequency signals to a lower intermediate frequency (IF) signals. They are also called low noise downconverters.

With the high frequencies that satellites operate at, it is critical that the noise levels is controlled prior to signal processing. Using LNB's makes it possible to amplify the signal while keeping the noise levels low thereby not requiring a larger dish antenna.

Important Parameters when looking for a Low Noise Block:

Input Frequency: This is the high frequency satellite signal that is received by the Low Noise Block. This is the frequency that is down converted by the Low Noise Block.

Output Frequency: This is the down converted frequency of the signal i.e the Intermediate Frequency Signal which can be used for further processing.

Gain (dB): The Gain that is provided by the amplifier of the low noise block.
