What are RF Detectors?
An RF detector monitors or samples the output of an RF system to develop a dc output voltage proportional to the power at that point. They are used to measure and control RF power in wireless systems. RF Detectors are critical for most commercial transmitters where the output power level must not exceed certain values based on the Federal Communications Commission regulations. Power detectors are used to provide feedback to the wireless systems based on which they regulate the output power.
There are two main types of detectors - logarithmic and RMS. The logarithmic detector converts the RF power into a DC voltage proportional to the log of the value. The RMS detector creates a DC output proportional to the RMS value of the signal. Based on this DC Voltage and the type of detector we can estimate the output power.
