What s a Phase Noise Analyzer?

Phase noise analyzers are primarily designed to measure/analyze the phase noise of signals generated by radio frequency (RF) and microwave devices. They measure the phase noise of both CW (continuous wave) and pulsed signals. In addition to measuring the SSB phase noise (dBc/Hz), most modern phase noise analyzers allow performing other measurements such as AM noise, residual FM, spurious noise, Allan variance, periodic jitter, RMS jitter, time jitter, RMS phase deviation, etc.

Phase noise is undesirable in a device because it has an adverse effect on the performance of wireless systems hence, measurement and reduction of phase noise is an important part of the design and development of wireless devices.

Three broad techniques have been developed to meet various requirements for phase noise measurements:

  1. Direct Spectrum
  2. Phase Detector
  3. Two-Channel Cross-Correlation

Phase noise analyzers often incorporate a cross-correlation technique in order to reduce instrument phase noise and maximize measurement sensitivity. The cross-correlation technique-based modern analyzer typically consists of two inbuilt reference signal sources, a phase detector, LPF, PLL loops, LNA, a real-time cross-correlation engine, and may have the supporting software. These analyzers help engineers make precise and accurate measurements of frequency signals, including those generated by atomic clocks and other high-performance frequency reference modules and subsystems.
