What is an RF Transceiver?

An RF Transceiver is an electronic component that integrated both transmitter and receiver components into a single device. The configuration of a transceiver can vary and each transceiver can consist of different sections of the Tx/Rx chain. For example, in the Tx and Rx chain can have mixers, switches, filters, amplifiers and a wide range of other components.

RF Transceivers are an integral part of wireless communication and are used to communicate voice/data/video information over the wireless medium. They can be further used to convert IF frequency to RF frequency and vice versa. Transceivers are used in satellite communication, for radio transmission and reception, for television signal transmission and reception, and in WiMAX, WLAN, ZigBee and Cellular networks.

Important parameters when looking for RF Transceivers:

Operating Frequency: It is the frequency range over which the device is fully functional, or it is the range of signals that can be broadcast and received. RF Transceivers have Tx and Rx modes, and therefore, input and output frequency range can be mentioned for any one or both the modes.

Modulation Techniques: A RF transceiver selection depends upon the modulation methods and radio techniques. There are various modulation techniques such as AM, FM, OOK, ASK, FSK, PSK, etc.

Sensitivity (dBm): It is the minimum input signal power that the transceiver can detect while receiving.

Output Power (dBm/W): It is the magnitude of power that the transceiver can provide while transmitting.
