What is a SATCOM Transceiver?

SATCOM transceiver is a device used in satellite-based applications for performing both transmitting (uplink) and receiving (downlink) operations. It features the combination of transmitter and receiver in a single package and typically uses a single antenna. This transceiver provides a bi-directional communication link between the ground terminal and the satellite. Typically, the SATCOM transceiver consists of a block upconverter (BUC), low-noise block (LNB), and DC power supply.

SATCOM transceivers are available in a wide range of frequency bands, such as C, X, Ku band, etc., and can be remotely monitored & controlled via various interfacing options. They are ideal for use in SATCOM applications such as satellite ground stations, ground vehicles (for example, media application), military, marine, airborne, IoT, etc.

Key Specifications of SATCOM Transceiver Include:

  • Operating Frequency: It is the Tx and Rx frequency range that the transceiver supports.
  • Gain: It is the gain (in dB) provided by the transceiver in the Tx and Rx chain.
  • Output Power: This is the output power that can be transmitted. It is represented in dBm or Watts.
  • Noise Figure (Rx): It is the noise in Rx chain, measured in dB. Minimum noise figure is desired in the Rx chain to avoid data loss.
  • Packaging: Rigidity of SATCOM transceiver plays an important role in determining the applications suitable for a particular transceiver. SATCOM transceivers find applications in harsh environments such as extreme temperatures, airborne or military applications and the transceivers should be available in suitable enclosures.
