Temperature Compensated Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillators or TCVCXO's or VCTCXO (Voltage Controlled Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillators) are VCXO's that have been designed for operation at high temperatures i.e they provide high frequency stability at high temperatures. They are a mix between a TCXO and a VCXO. It consists of a temperature controllable circuit that corrects the dependence of resonant frequency based on the temperature of the crystal.

When looking for a TCVCXO, the following are the important parameters that you must be aware of:

Frequency Range: This is the frequency range that can be provided by the TCVCXO. As you change the voltage, the frequency moves from the lower end of this range to the higher end.

Output Waveform: Output requirements are a major factors in manufacturing a TCVCXO oscillators as they are used in a wide variety of applications such as analog applications or in logic circuitry. The waveform can be Sine, Square, HCMOS, LVDS, PECL etc.

Frequency Stability: The frequency of the oscillator is specified in parts per million (ppm). Typical working values are ±25ppm, ±50ppm and ±100ppm. The voltage control point is set to the central value and stability value is generally specified at 20C temperature.

Supply Voltage: To make the oscillator work under the safety limits, it’s important to specify the supply voltage values. For an ideal case, It should be able to work outside the expected tolerance so that the oscillate remains safe even if the supply voltage exceeds the specified limit.

Pullability: The frequency range over which VCXO can be pulled up for a particular change in voltage is known as pullability. More the pullability larger will be the tuning range. However, small pullability values are preferred for high stability and low noise phases.

Package: Package specification becomes an important element as they are available forms such as hole mount and surface amount. Tape and reel are also available for large scale manufacturing of TCVCXOs oscillators using automated machinery.
