What is an RF Upconverter?
RF upconverters or frequency upconverters are integrated assemblies that convert low frequency RF signals to higher frequency RF signals. RF Upconverters are widely used in Satellite Communication (SATCOM) systems and have applications in 5G, Point-to-Point radio communication, and a number of other applications. Upconverters use the IF, or intermediate frequency, as the input and upconvert it to a higher frequency at the Output (RF Signal). The RF Frequency is created by mixing the IF signal with a local oscillator signal. The output RF signal is usually the sum of the IF and the LO Frequency. Upconverters can be thought of as mixers where only the higher frequency is of interest. They are often used in combination with power amplifiers so the output can also be amplified. In the SATCOM industry an Upconverter and Power Amplifier integrated into a single module is called a Block Upconverter.
Important parameters to consider when looking for an RF upconverter:
Input/IF Frequency: The intermediate frequency (IF) is the input to the upconverter. This is the lower frequency that needs to be upconverted.
Output/RF Frequency: This is the RF signal with an upconverted frequency.
Output Power: It is the magnitude of power that the upconverter will provide at the output after upconverting a signal.
Gain (dB): It is the net increase in power between the fundamental input signal and the upconverted output.
Noise Figure: It is the ratio (in dB) of the signal-to-noise ratio at the input of the component and the signal-to-noise ratio measured at the output.
