NXP's Single Chip NFC Solution for Digital Keys Certified by the Car Connectivity Consortium®

NXP Semiconductors' single-chip NFC and embedded secure element solution, the SN220, has been certified by the Car Connectivity Consortium® (CCC) under the CCC Digital Key™ Certification Program. Launched in December 2023, this program is a major step in standardizing digital car keys. NXP is the first provider to receive this certification for its NFC chips, contributing to a comprehensive digital car key ecosystem that includes Ultra-Wideband (UWB), NFC chips, and Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) for both mobile device manufacturers and car OEMs.

The SN220 combines an NFC controller with an embedded secure element in a single chip. It is part of an overall digital key system solution that includes not only a secure element and NFC but also UWB and Bluetooth LE, ensuring a consistent and seamless user experience.

Digital car keys allow drivers to access their cars seamlessly and securely, while also enabling them to control who can access their vehicles, such as family members or valet drivers. With the increasing use of digital keys, ensuring interoperability, security, and safety is essential. The CCC, with over 200 members including leading automotive manufacturers, smart device manufacturers, and technology companies, has introduced a certification program aligned with the CCC Digital Key specification. This ensures interoperability and security across cars, mobile phones, and other secure car access devices.

Michael Leitner, General Manager, Smart Car Access, NXP Semiconductors, stated: “As a charter member of the CCC, NXP has long been involved in the secure car access ecosystem. This certification validates the specification for digital keys in the automotive market. As the first certified solution provider, NXP’s systems will set the standard for quality and security in this growing market.”

Alysia Johnson, President, Car Connectivity Consortium, added: “Certification builds trust among consumers and the industry. It allows auto and device manufacturers to deliver secure, user-friendly experiences for digital key access. Our goal is to establish global compatibility for a seamless and secure digital key experience, regardless of the car or mobile device involved. CCC Digital Key certification helps make that possible.”

Zhang Shuxiao, Senior Director of Connectivity, Xiaomi, remarked: “At Xiaomi, we prioritize exceptional user experiences. The high performance of the SN220 and the commitment to interoperability shown with this certification are important to us, reflecting our dedication to delivering new and exciting features for our users.”
