5GAA Showcases 5G Vehicle-to-Everything Tech to Enhance Road Safety in Berlin

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) hosted a groundbreaking demonstration of Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology in Berlin, underscoring its potential to transform road safety. The event featured the latest advancements in 5G-enabled Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) applications, bringing together auto giants like Audi and BMW with industry leaders like Bosch, Commsignia, and Deutsche Telekom, all working towards "Vision Zero" – the goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries.

Enhanced Safety with 5G-V2X Direct Technology

In an impressive showcase, Audi and BMW vehicles equipped with 5G-V2X Direct technology demonstrated the life-saving impact of this next-generation connectivity. With support from 5GAA members Autotalks, Bosch, and Fraunhofer FOKUS, the vehicles used real-time sensor data and live camera feeds to alert drivers to unseen pedestrians and cyclists. This capability, made possible by 5G’s high bandwidth and ultra-low latency, exemplifies the rapid advancements in collective perception technology aimed at protecting vulnerable road users.

Real-World Safety Alerts and Cooperative Parking

Throughout central Berlin, companies including Mercedes-Benz, Vodafone, Ericsson, and LG used the 5G infrastructure to showcase new safety alerts for emergency vehicles and vulnerable road users. Real-time alerts were sent to vehicles, allowing drivers to respond proactively to potential hazards. Leveraging Multi-Access Edge Computing and precise positioning, these alerts ensure minimal lag and improved situational awareness.

In addition, Audi’s "cooperative parking" demonstration, developed with Commsignia and Autotalks, illustrated how 5G-V2X can simplify parking by enabling vehicles to communicate and collaborate for optimal space usage.

European Commitment to Safer Roads with 5G

“Germany and Europe are ready to leverage millions of connected vehicles to drive adoption of second-generation 5G-V2X technology,” stated 5GAA Chairman Christoph Voigt. This is a major step in Europe’s commitment to a connected and safer transport ecosystem, a goal solidified by 5GAA’s Visionary 2030 Roadmap and the continued deployment of 5G-V2X in commercial vehicles anticipated as early as 2026.

The Berlin demonstration highlighted the potential for 5G to improve both safety and efficiency on the roads and underscored the critical role that 5GAA and its members play in the future of connected mobility.
