The World’s First 94 GHz Transmit and Receive Chipsets for Commercial Applications

Arralis, a developer of 94 GHz technology, has developed the world’s first fully integrated transmit and receive 94 GHz core chipsets. They will be showcasing these chips at IMS 2016 being held in San Francisco from 24 to 26 of May. The devices make the highly desirable 94 GHz available for commercial applications such as fully autonomous radar for drones and self-driving vehicles as well as ‘wireless fiber’ communication speeds for 5G backhaul.

The devices are currently in the hands of Arralis’ leading customers with a full commercial roll out planned in the coming months. Their focus is currently on providing scale and integration for customers so that they can achieve easy system development and lower costs.

This release adds to their family of W-band Millimetre-wave Monolithic Integrated Circuits (MMIC) devices. Soo far, the 94 GHz has almost exclusively been used by the military radar market due the high cost and difficulty of integration. The 90 to 100 GHz band is very attractive due to the ability to develop ultra-small systems with unique propagation (long range) features. Arralis now enables this frequency band to be used by a wide range of commercial applications including 5G, mega constellations, drones, driverless vehicles and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The new series of transmit and receive chips are PHEMT GaAs devices that measure just 5.2 mm x 2.2 mm. The chip consists of an up-converter and a down-converter. The up-converter consists of a mixer with integrated medium power amplifier. It offers high image rejection and an output power of more than 13 dBm. The down-converter consists of a low noise amplifier and a mixer with a noise figure of less than 5 dB and a gain of more than 10 dB.
