Significant techno-logical advances have been a con-stant in the recent devel-opment in optical com-munication systems. Low attenuation fiber optics, high spectral purity lasers and optical ampli-fiers, among others, are devices that have allowed the transporting of hundreds of gigabits per second in thousands of kilometers, in a more reliable, secure and efficient manner, compared to radiofrequency (RF) systems. This transporting capacity pro-vides enough data for the growing demand on new communication services.
