Triggers are used to start a measurement sweep (sweep trigger) or a measurement of one point (point trigger). Most advanced vector network analyzers are able to automatically start measuring when certain predetermined conditions are met.

The most common application is the measurement under pulsed conditions, where e.g. each frequency point is measured on one pulse with the point trigger starting the measurement.
