Interview with Jeff Hu from Harogic Technologies

  • Jeff Hu - International Sales Director at Harogic Technologies

everything RF recently interviewed Jeff Hu who is the International Sales Director at HAROGIC Technologies. HAROGIC Technologies develops miniaturized, high-performance RF test equipment. Jeff's primary responsibility is to lead the growth of international sales for HAROGIC Technologies and build marketing strategies.

Q. Can you tell us about HAROGIC? When was the company founded and what was the objective?

Jeff HuHAROGIC (HARDWARE+LOGIC) was founded in 2015 with the goal of developing miniaturized, easy-to-use RF Test Equipment for various industries. The company focuses on the research and development, production and sales of ultra-miniaturized real-time spectrum analyzers and receivers. Their products operate across a frequency range from 9 kHz to 6.3/8.5/9.5/20/40 GHz.

Q. Can you tell us about your product portfolio and how it has evolved since inception? Which is your largest selling product?

Jeff HuAt the moment our product portfolio consists of real-time spectrum analyzers from 9 kHz to 40 GHz. In 2021, HAROGIC launched a series of 9/20 GHz compact USB spectrum analyzers based on SHR (Superheterodyne) architecture. In 2023, HAROGIC further improved the frequency range to 40 GHz and now in 2024 Q1, HAROGIC released a handheld spectrum analyzer that operates up to 20 GHz with an analysis bandwidth of 100 MHz and weighs only 1.5 kg.

So the HAROGIC portfolio will consist of the SA Series - USB real-time spectrum analyzers, NX Series – Network port real-time spectrum analyzer, and the PX Series – handheld real-time spectrum analyzers (coming soon).

The most popular models from HAROGIC are the SAM-60 M3 6.3 GHz USB real-time spectrum analyzer and SAE-200 20 GHz USB real-time spectrum analyzer.

Q. What makes your spectrum analysis equipment unique?

Jeff Hu: Our spectrum analyzers adhere to the SWaP-C philosophy. This means we optimize all devices for Size, Weight, Power, and Cost. S-Size: we develop a complete spectrum analyzer in a small form factor like a smartphone, all the way up to 40 GHz model product. W-Weight: the weight for core module is less than 200 grams, easy for customers to design embedded systems. P-Performance: High-performance for its weight and size. For example, the SAM-80 8.5 GHz spectrum analyzer has a 1GHz carrier SSB of -120 dBc/Hz@10kHz and DANL of -169 dBm/Hz, and the SAE-200 20 GHz spectrum analyzer has a 1GHz carrier SSB of -100 dBc/Hz@10kHz. Cost: The 20GHz and 40GHz real-time spectrum analyzers cost less than $10,000.00 USD.

Q. Can you tell us more about your Network Node Real-time Spectrum Analyzers? How are they different from conventional analyzers?

Jeff HuNX series (Network Node Real-Time Spectrum Analyzers) are specially designed for remote-controlled systems and applications, equipped with a 1000 MBPS Ethernet interface. These spectrum analyzers are usually deployed outdoors for spectrum monitoring or can be used with applications where the analyzer needs to be placed at a distance from where it is controlled.

Q. Can you tell us about the software that is used by your analyzers? Do you develop this software? What are its features? Can you provide a few screenshots?

Jeff HuThe software used by HAROGIC spectrum analyzer models is the SAStudio4, which was originally designed and developed by the HAROGIC team. It’s free software that is constantly updated and compatible with all HAROGIC models. It contains four main working modes: standard spectrum sweep (SWP), IQ streaming (IQS), detection (DET), and real-time spectrum analysis (RTA). It can measure most parameters by default including phase noise, channel power, OBW, ACPB, IQ streaming, pulse signal measurement, record and playback, etc.

Q. Do you support 3rd Party Software Development? Do you have an API?

Jeff Hu: HAROGIC hardware and products support 3rd Party Software development along with the ARCALE RF suite, a software for radio frequency signal analysis. We also provide users with the free and constantly updated HTRA API, which is compatible with all HAROGIC models. Moreover, we have built the API based on a standard dynamic-link library (DLL) so that customers can develop their own software. We also provide end-users with API examples and documentation so that they can get familiar with our API.

Q. Spectrum Analysis is a requirement in a wide range of applications and industries. Do you have an application or industry focus? What application or industry drives the most business for you at the moment? Do you expect this to change?

Jeff HuMost of our customers are from the spectrum analysis field and use our devices for test & measurement, spectrum monitoring, and embedded systems. The largest segment for us at the moment is the embedded systems segment. We expect this to change over time with the introduction of the handheld real-time spectrum analyzer. We expect users in the regular Test & Measurement segment to use our analyzer for their generic needs.

Q. Who are your customers and where are they located? What is the geographic break up of these customers?

Jeff HuThe customers who buy our products are mainly divided into two groups: Group 1: RF solution companies that need our products for system integration. Group 2: Customers who need a spectrum analyzer for spectrum analysis and general testing.

Our customers are located all over the world - North America, Europe, India, Australia, Israel and Japan are our largest markets.

Q. Can you tell us more about your sales and support channels? How do you sell your products across the globe and how do you provide global customer support?

Jeff Hu: Generally, we sell our products under two channels - online and via local distributors. We provide local sales service and technical support via local distributors to support our customers. We are also planning to release some product tear-down videos via some influencers in this field so that more customers can learn about how we achieve this product design. Moreover, digital advertisement is also on the list, we will be working with everything RF and Microwave Journal to spread the word.

Q. How does 2024 look for HAROGIC? Are there any new products on the horizon?

Jeff Hu: I am excited for 2024 cause HAROGIC will launch a few very interesting products including a handheld spectrum analyzer that operates up to 40 GHz with an analysis bandwidth of 100 MHz and weighs only 1.5 kg. We sincerely hope that more partners can enjoy the fruits of the continuous innovation from HAROGIC.
