GaN Amplifier Powers Ku Band Block Upconverter

Trak MicrowaveTRAK Microwave has introduced the Model MFC147 which is a Ku-Band amplifier that operates from 13.75 GHz to 14.50 GHz. It can be used for civilian and military aviation Ku-band SATCOM applications, including In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) systems and UAV communications. The amplifier features a ruggedized design and innovative thermal management technique to withstand challenging airborne environments utilizing SMT construction with no open die. Input frequency to the Block Upconverter (BUC) is 950-1700 MHz, with Ku-band output signal with power levels ranging from 12 to 17 dBm.  An integrated, low-noise, GaN, Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) provides over 25 watts of power with better than -120 dBc/Hz noise power (-140 dBc/Hz typical) and <-22 dBc spectral regrowth (OQPSK).

The MFC147 includes built-in test (BIT), temperature monitoring and FWD/REV power detectors, all monitored via standard serial commands.  Drain voltage control reduces thermal dissipation at lower power output levels. The BUC includes 0 to +7 dB gain expansion and 30 dB digital gain control for optimum SSPA performance. The device is offered as EAR99 and is not subject to export restrictions.
