Werbel Microwave – a designer and manufacturer of high-performance radio frequency components for military, commercial, test and measurement applications – has introduced a multi-output coupler that eliminates the need for an additional power divider when multiplexing. The Model C-9001-8.5 is a multi-output quad-directional coupler that operates up to 18 GHz with four separate output bands (4 – 8 GHz. 7 – 12 GHz, 11 – 15 GHz and 14 – 18 GHz). This unique design approach offers the ability to filter different bands without the need of a power splitter, thereby reducing the path insertion loss.
Werbel Microwave developed this product specifically for a customer who required four 8.5 dB couplers at four different frequency bands. Each coupler was required to be electrically isolated from the others and feed separate low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) tuned to different bands. The traditional approach would require a single coupler fed into a 4-way splitter, followed by bandpass filters. This implementation would have added an additional ~7 dB of loss, which would have defeated the efficacy of the low-noise amplifiers.
This 8.5 dB multi-output coupler has an impedance of 50 ohms and provides a directivity of 5.2 dB. It can handle an input power of 10 W and is designed for indoor applications. The C-9001-8.5 is available in a module that measures 4.25 x 0.60 x 0.38 inches with SMA-female connectors.
Werbel Microwave can develop multi-output couplers for customers with any number of outputs covering octave frequency bands from 0.5 to 20 GHz with different coupling values from 8-30 dB within the same unit. The product usually takes about 12 weeks to design and deliver. Contact Werble Microwave to develop a custom multi-output coupler.
