Innovative Waveguide Antennas for Short-Range and Mid-Range Automotive Radar Applications

Gapwaves, an innovative provider of mm-wave antenna systems has developed waveguide antennas for short-range and mid-range radar applications. These have been developed for all types of ADAS & AD applications with full coverage of the allocated automotive frequency band at 76-81 GHz and 140 GHz. The better the antenna of the radar, the better the range and field of view – and the better the range and field of view, the safer the traffic. Gapwaves’ automotive radar antennas are exceptional in performance and cost-efficient in high-volume production.

These antennas are based on a unique gap waveguide technology that does not require soldering, screws or glue between antenna layers. Assembly is made with simple riveting, this enables the use of low-temperature plastic antenna layers with copper metallization instead of expensive silver coating. The minimum number of injection-molded layers in combination with sheet metal allows them to develop some of the thinnest antennas possible.

By adding different layers to the antenna like an absorber, we enable an easier integration in the radar sensor. Adding a thermal spreader we support the cooling of the ICs. Gapwaves radar antennas support board launchers as well as Launcher-in-package (LiP), with ready solutions for the major chipset manufacturers.

Simplifying the design and reducing manufacturing process steps, Gapwaves offers the highest-performing, most cost-effective waveguide antenna available on the market.
