STMicroelectronics has integrated Ceva's Cellular IoT IP platform into its new ST87M01 module. This integration leverages Ceva-Waves Dragonfly NB-IoT platform IP, aiming to provide robust and low-power wide area network (LPWAN) connectivity.
The ST87M01 module is designed for a broad range of IoT applications, including smart meters, smart grids, smart buildings, smart cities, industrial monitoring, factory automation, smart agriculture, environmental monitoring, and tracking applications. The module's accurate and resilient GNSS geo-location capability enhances its suitability for these uses.
Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) technology is essential for low-power, wide-area connectivity, facilitating efficient data transmission for numerous IoT devices. Ceva-Waves Dragonfly platform incorporates a Ceva-BX1 processor, RF transceiver, baseband, and protocol stack, offering a comprehensive Release 15 Cat-NB2 modem IP solution. This solution aims to reduce time-to-market and lower entry barriers for IoT device manufacturers.
According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, the number of cellular IoT connections is expected to grow from 3 billion in 2023 to 6.1 billion by 2029, a compound annual growth rate of 12%. The ST87M01 module, integrating Ceva's platform, targets this expanding market by supporting diverse IoT applications that rely on cellular connectivity.
Domenico Arrigo of STMicroelectronics highlighted the importance of tight collaboration and engineering support from Ceva in developing the ST87M01 module. Tal Shalev of Ceva expressed pride in empowering STMicroelectronics to enhance cellular IoT performance and power efficiency with their modem IP solution.
The Ceva-Waves Dragonfly platform is a software-configurable solution that can be extended with multi-constellation GNSS and sensor fusion functionality. It includes reference silicon of the complete modem design, an embedded CMOS RF transceiver, an advanced digital front-end, physical layer firmware, and a protocol stack.
