u-blox Introduces First Satellite IoT-NTN Cellular Module with Embedded GNSS

u-blox, a global leader in positioning and wireless communication technologies, has introduced its first combined satellite and cellular IoT module, the SARA-S528NM10. Powered by the UBX-S52 cellular/satellite chipset and M10 GNSS platform, the new module provides low-power, concurrent positioning, making it a groundbreaking solution for the growing satellite IoT market.

The SARA-S528NM10 complies with the 3GPP Rel 17 specification, ensuring seamless global connectivity and support for critical IoT applications such as remote asset tracking, industrial monitoring, smart utilities, and fleet management. As cellular networks cover only about 10% of the globe, this module addresses the need for reliable, low-cost satellite connectivity, even in remote and maritime environments.

According to Stephan Zizala, CEO of u-blox, “The new module is designed to maintain connectivity in areas where cellular coverage is absent, ensuring efficient, low-power satellite IoT solutions. Its high RF sensitivity reduces the time needed for location fixes, providing continuous tracking without draining power.”

The SARA-S528NM10 is not only efficient but also versatile, supporting LTE-M and NB-IoT on terrestrial cellular networks, as well as NB-IoT on geostationary (GEO) satellites. It’s future-proofed to support low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. Additionally, the module is undergoing certification with Skylo, a leading NTN service provider, further ensuring reliable satellite and cellular integration.

Another key feature of the SARA-S528NM10 is its compatibility with all three new NTN bands: n23 (United States), n255 (L-band global), and n256 (S-band Europe). The module is also pin-compatible with existing u-blox cellular modules, making it an easy upgrade for engineers using legacy IoT products.

The satellite IoT market is projected to exceed USD 4 billion by 2030, driven by increasing demand for global, continuous connectivity solutions. The u-blox SARA-S528NM10 module is poised to play a crucial role in this growth by offering a cost-effective, scalable, and standards-based approach to IoT connectivity.
