STMicroelectronics and Qualcomm Join Forces to Drive the Next Generation of Wireless IoT Innovation

STMicroelectronics, a global provider of semiconductor solutions, will collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies International, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, aimed at revolutionizing the landscape of industrial and consumer IoT (Internet of Things) applications. This collaboration will merge STMicroelectronics’ STM32 microcontroller ecosystem with Qualcomm’s state-of-the-art wireless connectivity technologies, including its AI-powered Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread combo system-on-chip (SoC).

This partnership is set to accelerate the design and deployment of next-generation IoT solutions by providing developers with seamless software integration into STM32 microcontrollers. The collaboration will facilitate rapid, cost-effective development of edge AI-augmented IoT devices across a wide range of industries, including industrial automation, consumer electronics, and smart home solutions.

Strengthening IoT Through Combined Expertise

As the IoT market continues to expand, demand for efficient, high-performance wireless connectivity is skyrocketing. STMicroelectronics and Qualcomm, each recognized for their cutting-edge technologies, are joining forces to meet this growing demand. The collaboration leverages Qualcomm’s leadership in AI-driven wireless connectivity solutions and STMicroelectronics’ dominance in the microcontroller market, with more than 100,000 STM32 customers globally.

Rémi El-Ouazzane, President of Microcontrollers, Digital ICs, and RF Products Group at STMicroelectronics, emphasized the strategic importance of wireless connectivity for the growth of edge AI solutions. "Wireless connectivity is key to the fast pervasion of edge AI across an ever-growing variety of use cases in enterprise, industrial, and personal applications. This is why we are establishing a strategic collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies today," El-Ouazzane said.

He further added that STMicroelectronics aims to enhance its already strong portfolio, which includes Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, Thread, and sub-GHz products, with Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread combo SoCs. "We envision these wireless connectivity products augmenting our STM32 line to bring significant value to our customers worldwide."

Qualcomm's Leadership in Wireless Innovation

Qualcomm Technologies, a company renowned for pioneering advancements in 4G, 5G, and high-performance Wi-Fi solutions, is contributing its deep expertise in wireless IoT to this collaboration. Rahul Patel, Group General Manager for Qualcomm's Connectivity, Broadband, and Networking Business Unit, emphasized the exciting potential of this collaboration. “Qualcomm Technologies' research and development leadership has helped drive the evolution of wireless IoT,” Patel said.

"Our collaboration with STMicroelectronics pairs Qualcomm’s best-in-class connectivity solutions with ST’s leading STM32 microcontroller ecosystem. Together, we are setting new standards for IoT applications, empowering developers with seamless integration and optimal performance," he added.

Impact on the Developer Ecosystem

One of the most significant advantages of this collaboration is the seamless integration of Qualcomm's wireless solutions into ST’s STM32 developer ecosystem. By aligning with ST’s comprehensive software tools and platforms, developers can leverage pre-built wireless solutions to reduce design complexity and speed up time-to-market. Initial offerings from this collaboration will include self-contained modules that combine Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread combo SoC with STM32 general-purpose microcontrollers.

These solutions will be particularly valuable for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seeking to create IoT products with advanced wireless capabilities while minimizing development time and costs. The first of these products is expected to be available by Q1 2025, with broader availability following later in the year. Future steps include plans to extend the collaboration into cellular IoT connectivity, targeting the needs of industrial IoT applications.

Industry Reactions and Market Potential

Experts in the field are optimistic about the potential impact of this collaboration on the broader IoT market. According to Andrew Zignani, Senior Research Director at ABI Research, the partnership comes at a crucial time for the IoT industry, which is expected to experience exponential growth.

“With the installed base of consumer, commercial, and industrial connected devices expected to surpass 80 billion units by 2028, the need for high-performance wireless connectivity solutions paired with diverse microcontroller options will be essential to meet this demand,” Zignani noted.

He also highlighted that the combined strengths of STMicroelectronics and Qualcomm Technologies will allow developers to address the growing needs of this dynamic market more efficiently. "This collaboration is a perfect match thanks to ST’s leading microcontroller ecosystem and Qualcomm’s R&D leadership in wireless connectivity. Together, they will enable companies to build next-gen IoT solutions more quickly, simply, and cost-effectively," he said.

A Roadmap for Future Collaboration

This partnership marks the first step in a broader strategy to offer a series of Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread combo SoCs, with plans to expand into cellular connectivity for more demanding industrial IoT applications in the future. The collaboration will help simplify the integration of wireless capabilities into IoT devices, empowering developers to meet evolving market demands and capitalize on the rapid growth of connected technologies.

By providing integrated, ready-to-use wireless solutions, STMicroelectronics and Qualcomm aim to help companies address complex IoT use cases—from smart homes to industrial automation—more effectively and efficiently. The roadmap for future developments will focus on continuously enhancing connectivity and AI capabilities for the rapidly evolving IoT landscape.
