In a major technological breakthrough, Comcast and CommScope have unveiled the first live deployment of CommScope’s Full Duplex (FDX) DOCSIS amplifier, representing a pivotal advancement in next-generation internet connectivity. This deployment is set to boost Comcast’s capability to deliver multi-gig symmetrical services to millions of customers nationwide, offering improved performance, enhanced reliability, and strengthened security.
Following years of joint development, this milestone positions Comcast to accelerate the roll-out of its DOCSIS 4.0 FDX technology, which aims to provide cutting-edge internet speeds. The FDX amplifiers, now live in Comcast's network, are designed to streamline the upgrade process and enhance the performance of Comcast’s existing infrastructure.
According to Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer at Comcast, “We’ve made significant progress since our announcement at SCTE Expo last year, and this deployment brings multi-gig symmetrical service to life. Our new FDX amplifiers, enhanced with AI capabilities, will enable smart automation and unprecedented reliability.”
This is a continuation of Comcast's aggressive expansion of DOCSIS 4.0 FDX, which began in October 2023. More than one million homes across six markets have already been connected to this new standard. The scalable nature of FDX amplifiers ensures a path toward bringing multi-gig services to a broader audience, using existing network architecture.
CommScope has been a key partner in the development of this advanced technology. Guy Sucharczuk, SVP & President of Access Network Solutions at CommScope, expressed pride in seeing this development come to fruition. “Our joint efforts with Comcast highlight our ability to push DOCSIS technology to new heights and extend the utility of existing HFC networks. This successful deployment underscores our leadership in RPD Node and RF Amplifier solutions.”
Pioneering the Future of Internet Technology
This deployment features CommScope's STARLINE® Full Duplex (FDX) DOCSIS amplifiers, which use Unified DOCSIS 4.0 silicon technology. These amplifiers dynamically share spectrum to maximize bandwidth for both upstream and downstream traffic, allowing more efficient use of the network. Additionally, Comcast is also implementing CommScope's Opti Max® OM6000® FDX node, enhancing its network's capability to handle increasing demand.
CommScope's hardware was on display at the upcoming SCTE® TechExpo24 in Atlanta, where visitors could view live demonstrations of the FDX amplifiers and nodes, as well as other next-gen solutions at Booth 1321.
This partnership marks a critical step in building a future-proof network for customers across the U.S., ensuring that Comcast remains at the forefront of high-speed, reliable, and intelligent internet services. With this deployment, millions of homes and businesses can expect faster and more robust connectivity in the near future.
