NGMN Releases “Radio Performance Assessment Framework” to Propel Next-Generation RAN Development

Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) has introduced its latest publication, the “Radio Performance Assessment Framework,” aimed at shaping the future of Radio Access Network (RAN) development. This comprehensive framework provides the mobile communications sector with a standardized approach to evaluating the performance and benefits of new RAN solutions.

Building on its 2023 Mobile Network Operator (MNO) Position Statement, which underscored the need for next-generation RAN technologies to deliver measurable benefits such as enabling novel use cases or enhancing operational efficiencies (e.g., reduced energy consumption), NGMN’s framework offers industry players a practical and clear assessment methodology.

A Step Towards Better RAN Innovations

Luke Ibbetson, Member of the NGMN Alliance Board and Head of Group R&D at Vodafone, commented on the publication’s significance:

“This NGMN publication provides strong guidance towards ensuring that future RAN developments align with operator expectations on performance and efficiency. Our Radio Performance Assessment Framework establishes a robust foundation for fair benchmarking and sets a new standard for delivering measurable value in the era beyond 5G Advanced.”

The framework serves as a pivotal tool for mobile operators, vendors, and researchers to benchmark RAN performance, ensuring innovations are aligned with industry needs and delivering clear, quantifiable advantages.

The Industry's Next Steps

The NGMN framework arrives at a critical time as the telecommunications industry evolves beyond 5G Advanced and toward the advent of 6G. With increasing complexities in network demands, the framework aims to help stakeholders navigate technological advancements and foster transparency in evaluating RAN performance.
