Cobham Wireless idDAS to Provide Seamless 4G Coverage to Berlin’s Football Fans

Cobham Wireless announced that their revolutionary, capacity-centric, intelligent digital DAS (idDAS) will be used to provide extra high-bandwidth mobile coverage to hundreds of thousands of football supporters on Berlin’s Fan Mile.

The Fan Mile screened matches and hosted the German team’s victory parade during the last World Cup, but receiving a high-bandwidth cellular mobile signal during these events proved extremely difficult. This was due to regulations on visible cellular equipment on the site and the large number of people attempting to access high-bandwidth services simultaneously compromising service availability.

The Fan Mile will be used for public screenings of major matches. As a result of the idDAS installation, football fans at these events will be able to upload HD images and videos alongside accessing the complete range of communication services.

Their idDAS system was installed on the mile stretch, which runs in the centre of Berlin from the Victory Column to the Brandenburg Gate, to provide coverage for major events and was first used on New Year’s Eve 2015 to coincide with Europe’s largest street party – attended by one million people. During the party users were able to access a minimum of 50 Mbps in the busiest areas with an average 4G throughput of 70Mbps across the whole site.

The idDAS project in Berlin was an astounding success during the New Year street party with around one million people being provided with high-bandwidth cellular coverage by our wireless operator partners. idDAS’ revolutionary Cloud-RAN technology revolutionises inner-city cellular coverage, delivering highly resilient, high-capacity cellular resources in areas where this is traditionally almost impossible.
