Infineon Technologies and InnoSenT have released a surface mountable radar (SMR) motion detector that operates in the 24 GHz ISM band. The SMR series of radar sensors from InnoSenT have the latest 24 GHz transceiver MMIC BGT24LTR11 from Infineon offering a unique easy-to-install solution with high functionality and low power consumption.
Operating in the 24 GHz to 24.25 GHz ISM band, the Infineon transceiver features a fully integrated low phase noise voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and built-in temperature compensation circuit for VCO stabilization. Additionally it has full ESD protection, 200 GHz bipolar SiGe: C technology B7HF200 and single supply voltage of 3.3 V. These features make the Infineon MMIC the ideal part at the heart of the new InnoSenT series.
With an outline of only 20 mm x 15 mm x 3 mm the new SMR series of radar sensors are available in an ultra-compact design to ease integration even in the smallest space available. Not only are the SMR radars small, being an SMT device makes them extraordinary well suitable for high volume production. The units are available in tape & reel and can be handled in a standard SMT process along with all other board components like resistors, transistors and integrated circuits. No additional handwork is required. A low duty-cycle pulse mode is available to aid power consumption in low power applications. It provides a perfect solution for Security Applications, Home-Automation, Lighting Control, Intelligent Machine Control, Touch-free Switches, and Movement Detection.
Radar used in motion detection applications increases accuracy when compared to passive infrared (PIR) technology. It allows a more precise measurement of object detection and provides new capabilities such as the detection of speed and direction of moving objects. Radar is also superior to camera based systems by allowing detection of the objects while keeping identities anonymous.
At the moment the SMR series comprises of three types of modules with different antenna characteristics. In addition to the option of simple motion detection with a corresponding evaluation, it is also possible to determine speed information and direction of movement to the detected object from the returned data. The Silicon Germanium radar MMIC from Infineon was designed with the Doppler-radar applications in mind, which enables additional functionalities. Beside 24 GHz fundamental voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) it also brings variants for FMCW (frequency modulated) or FSK (frequency shift keying) operation mode to this series.
