Volkswagen has selected the AirPrime AR Series modules and the Legato platform from Sierra Wireless for its next generation of connected cars. This integrated 4G technology will reach the market beginning in 2018 in several Volkswagen models worldwide.
Sierra Wireless automotive solutions will deliver high-speed cellular connectivity for the Volkswagen Car-Net platform, which provides a variety of in-vehicle internet-based services, including remote vehicle access, roadside assistance, diagnostics and maintenance, and the ability to set speed and boundary alerts. Owners can use their applications over the integrated 4G-LTE connection provided by the AirPrime module.
More than a cellular modem, the AR Series provides a secure device-to-cloud architecture enabling automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers to build a Linux-based TCU (telematics control unit) using a single module. The automotive-grade modules reduce risk and meet the highest quality standards:
- Automotive-grade manufacturing (TS-16949 certified)
- Automotive quality processes (PPAP, 8D, FA) & low target ppm rates
- Tolerance to extreme operating environments including thermal shock cycles
- Extended operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C
AR Series Features and Benefits:
- ARM core application processor with dedicated Flash and RAM running Legato enhances security, reduces system complexity, and lowers overall BOM (bill of materials)
- GNSS receiver enables tracking and location-based services
- Secure boot and value-add firmware with FREE unlimited firmware over-the-air (FOTA) upgrades for the lifetime of the module to keep the connectivity optimized and secure
- Interfaces include USB, UART, SDIO, HSIC, I2C, SPI, GPIO, ADC, PCM, and more
- Secure device-to-cloud architecture with AirVantage pre-integrated into the Legato platform
Volkswagen will utilize Sierra Wireless technology to expand into additional value-added connected services and telematics. These services are enabled through the Legato platform, which provides an application framework and development environment that allows third-party applications to be built and hosted directly on the wireless module.
