AT&T Deploys Commercial LTE Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) Technology in Indianapolis

AT&T has deployed Commercial LTE-Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) technologies in selected parts of downtown Indianapolis. This technology is another step in the evolution to 5G. The company is working closely with the City of Indianapolis to deploy the upgrades needed to support future technologies, like 5G. 

LTE-LAA is expected to play a key role as it aims to reach theoretical peak speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). In previous field tests of this technology, AT&T was one of the first carriers to observe actual peak wireless speeds of 979 megabits per second (Mbps).  

With the Samsung Galaxy Note8, AT&T wireless customers in the areas within Indianapolis, can take advantage of what this technology offers. Adding next-gen technologies like LTE-LAA to the wireless network in parts of Indianapolis is just one way to improve the customers’ experience and preparing for standard-based 5G. Moreover, $350 million were invested in wireless and wired networks during 2014-2016.

While 5G standards are still being finalized, AT&T is laying the foundation for tomorrow’s faster wireless speeds with the initial launch of 5G Evolution in Indianapolis with technologies like LTE-LAA. These are major steps on the journey to deliver 5G as early as late 2018. It is continuing to upgrade cell towers with 5G Evolution technologies like 256 QAM, 4x4 MIMO and 3-way carrier aggregation. While speeds will vary in 5G Evolution markets, in parts of Austin and Indianapolis, these technologies are delivering speeds 2x faster than standard LTE.
