Vubiq Networks Files Patent for mm-Wave Based Multimode RFID Technology

mm-Wave wireless broadband technology company, Vubiq Networks, has filed a new RFID patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The application is entitled Multimode Millimeter Wave RFID Systems and Methods Thereof and has been assigned the application number 62746829.

The company currently already holds two existing RFID technology patents:

  • US Patent Number 7460014, issued December 2, 2008 – RFID System Utilizing Parametric Reflective Technology
  • US Patent Number 7498940, issued March 3, 2009 – RFID System Utilizing Parametric Reradiated Technology

According to Mike Pettus, Founder and CTO of Vubiq Networks, once added to their extensive portfolio of 15 technology patents, the new multimode millimeter wave patent will protect the company’s existing RFID technology in conjunction with a new reader design that preforms wide-beam SAR, narrow beam reads from chipped tags, and narrow-beam reads and communications with chipped tag and Internet of Things devices.

The new patent application expands the company’s protection for its unique data-encoding scheme that exploits the natural physics of antennas at a tremendously small scale. The new application covers breakthrough technology with dual mode capabilities for identification and communication with various types of RFID tags and smart sensors using SAR while in a wide-beam pattern mode, and then shift to a narrow-beam steered mode for powering and communicating with the tags and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. Vubiq’s advanced radar imaging technology can locate various types of chipless and chipped RFID tags, as well as IoT devices, with a very high degree of accuracy. Once the tags or devices have been located, Vubiq’s technology can power and communicate with the RFID tags in the far field.

The new approach to RFID significantly reduces cost, while providing performance advantages and features not available in existing systems. Vubiq feels that the size of the aggregate market is several times larger than chipless RFID or chipped RFID individually, let alone the exploding IOT market.
