Fujitsu Electronics Europe (FEEU) is working with InnoPhase (a US Based Company) to explore their extremely low-power PolaRFusion radio architecture for battery-based wireless IoT applications. The revolutionary radio architecture moves RF processing functionality from power-hungry and large analog circuits into efficient, low-power digital logic. This opens new possibilities in the utilization of today’s WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and other popular radio protocols. The lower power consumption will enable a whole new class of battery operated IoT devices.
Right after the launch of InnoPhase's first product at the beginning of 2018, the Talaria ONE ULP WiFi Radio, FEEU has been evaluating the potential of WiFi being available in battery-based applications. Based on customer feedback and ideas, InnoPhase is now planning to expand the device’s feature set in a new product that will be launched in 2019.
The PolaRFusion architecture moves wireless processing from power-hungry and large analog circuits into the efficient, low-power digital domain. This full polar RF architecture improves the battery life of Wi-Fi, LTE, and other popular IoT wireless device protocols by 2 to 8 times. This longer battery life will fuel a rapid expansion of the battery-based IoT market.
Moving the radio function from the analog to digital domain enables battery-based wireless products to take advantage of Moore’s Law for even lower power and smaller die sizes as products move to more advanced semiconductor process nodes. This groundbreaking radio architecture will create a whole new class of low power, IoT products that can cut the cord and be battery-based. Imagine direct cloud-connected smart door locks, security cameras, smart speakers, and patient monitoring equipment with batteries that last for months or even years, not weeks.
The PolaRFusion architecture also integrates low-cost, nonlinear digital signal processors to receive, process, and transmit industry standard protocols under software control with excellent sensitivity, signal output levels, data rates, and other critical RF specifications. The multiprotocol wireless products based on this advanced radio design are in the final stages of development and field testing, with volume production slated for early next year. By combining Energy Harvesting from E-Peas with the Ultra-Low Power MCUs from Ambiq Micro and Fujitsu FRAM (Ultra-Low Power Non-Volatile Memory), InnoPhase’s PolaRFusion adds a new level of freedom in the selection of the used RF protocol while applications remain battery-based and energy-efficient. Selected application examples featuring the upcoming devices from InnoPhase will be made available by FEEU on the ClickBeetle reference platform.
