The IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society’s 2019 IMS Microwave Week will be held from 2-7 June 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts. This year’s event will feature a number of new start-ups and innovators in the field. Premiering at IMS2019 is the ‘Startup Pavilion,’ a stand-out space on the exhibit floor dedicated to startups and new companies. Featured exhibitors include Altum RF, JETCOOL Technologies, Iconic RF, Kumu Networks, Nalu Scientific, Raytech, and Starry. We have compiled a list of some of the interesting new startups that will be exhibiting at IMS 2019.
Altum RF is a fabless semiconductor company that designs high-performance millimeter-wave to digital solutions for next-generation markets and applications. They develop semiconductor solutions for Telecom, Satcom, RADAR Sensors, Test & Measurement, Aerospace & Defense or Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) applications.
At their booth, customers can learn more about their products, including the ARF1307C7, a 2-20 GHz GaN distributed amplifier that delivers 10W of saturated output power, and the ARF1202Q2, a 39 GHz low noise amplifier for 5G millimeter-wave infrastructure.

JETCOOL Technologies, a spin-off from MIT, develops low SWaP cooling solutions for the most power dense electronic chips. The technology behind JETCOOL was developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, by a team led by Bernie Malouin. JETCOOL is set out to introduce high-performance cooling to new application areas, working with technology companies to enable their next generations of devices.
JETCOOL cooling technology uses small jets of high-velocity fluid to cool the device. Instead of passing fluid over a surface like in typical heat sinks or cold plates, microjets are aimed directly at the surface.
Their cooling solutions:
- produce very high heat transfer coefficients
- come in packages the same size as the die
- are lightweight, requiring no metals
- don't use any thermal epoxies or pastes
ICONIC RF, an RF engineering team with RF design specializing in GaN and GaAs MMIC design, RF measurement and RF prototyping. Their on-wafer active harmonic load-pull system to 67GHz provides the key in RF technology assessment. Through waveform engineering and Cardiff behavioral model extraction, the system offers highest achievable performance in a short design cycle.
ICONIC RF also provides automated test benches, with CW and pulsed RF testing to 50GHz as well as modulated and 2-tone, providing a pathway to production test.
Kumu Networks has created a full-duplex wireless system that transmits and receives on the same frequency at the same time–doubling spectral efficiency. This unique and innovative solution employs software-controlled, self-interference-cancellation technology, eliminating the need for frequency or time division duplexing. In addition to its potential impact on future standards and markets, Kumu Networks’ technology can be used to enhance today’s spectrum reuse and overcome the limitations of hardware-based filters.
Nalu Scientific specializes in advanced mixed-signal integrated circuits with applications in particle tracking and time of flight measurements. NSL’s focus is on advanced electronics, including sensors with applications in fast timing measurements, smart controls, RF and wave propagation, digital and analog design. NSL has access to extensive electronic, optical, mechanical and industrial design and simulation tools and software and has developed in-house code bases and libraries for simulations and analysis. NSL’s team includes senior engineers, IP, legal, and strategic business advisors.
Nalu Scientific has been the recipient of multiple SBIR awards from the department of energy to develop the next generation System-on-Chip based front end electronics for particle tracking applications.
Nalu Scientific will be among the startups in the brand new “Next Top Startup Competition” at the IEEE MTTS International Microwave Symposium (IMS).
Raytech Group is a provider of comprehensive solutions in the production of complete electrical systems – including connectors and cable harnesses – and the distribution of wiring materials and electric components. Raytech produces cable harnesses for a large range of applications – from simple to complex systems, from prototype to high volume – since 1992. Their systems are used for industrial, transport, defense and aviation applications.
Starry was the first company to commercially deploy pre-standard 5G, point-to-multipoint fixed wireless technology to deliver gigabit capable broadband to the home. Starry was also one of the first internet service providers to codify in its terms of service, its unwavering commitment to an open and neutral internet. Today, Starry is passing more than 350,000 homes in the Boston metropolitan area and is currently launched in Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
Starry’s base station technology, Starry Beam, provides end users with ultrafast speeds, increased bandwidth capacity, reliable connections, and extended range. Starry first launched its pre-standard 5G, point-to-multipoint fixed wireless technology in 2016 in Boston.
Starry uses millimeter wave spectrum for low-latency, high-capacity fixed wireless broadband networks to deliver ultra-fast, reliable internet broadband. It’s phased array, millimeter wave technology enables the use of very narrow beam-width antennas, which direct the generated power precisely where it is needed, delivering high-speed broadband capacity. Starry’s base stations deliver gigabit-capable speeds up to a three-kilometer radius including rain fade and attenuation. Each Starry Beam is capable of serving hundreds of Starry receivers.
Also new this year is the “Next Top Startup Competition,” which is a platform for entrepreneurs to pitch their concepts to expert judges active in the startup ecosystem including investment firms, tech startup incubators and experts in RF technologies.
Participants have the opportunity to showcase their products and ideas to IMS exhibition attendees while competing to be “Best Startup of IMS2019.” Prizes for the winner include a feature in Microwave Journal and mentorship at the Venture Café at the Cambridge Innovation Center. This year’s competitors include Atheraxon, Menlo Microsystems, Nalu Scientific and JETCOOL Technologies.
