The 2247 from Empower RF Systems is a Solid-State Power Amplifier that operates from 5400 to 5900 MHz. It delivers a peak pulsed output power of more than 30 kW with a pulse width from 0.2 to 500 µs (at 20% duty cycle) and a pulse repetition frequency of 500 kHz. This class AB amplifier provides a power gain of 81 dB and has a gain adjustment range of more than 20 dB. It consists of multi-drawer integrated liquid-cooled sub-systems where each of the amplifier subsystem drawers features multiple high-power GaN-on-SiC devices that provide wide frequency response, high gain, high peak power capability, and low distortions. Each drawer is a full PA with an integrated single-phase power supply and liquid cooling.
The 2247 includes a built-in control and monitoring system, with protection functions which preserve maximum output availability and reliability. The duty cycle and the pulse width protection can be selected to back off the power when any of them violates the maximum limits. The protection will act immediately and back off the output by about 7dB and will stay in this condition until the operation returns to normal for at least 5 pulses, therefore there will be no change in the shape of the pulse after the first detected violation. This feature allows the unit to operate in CW with a back-off of the output power.
The 2247 employs advanced broadband RF matching networks and combines techniques to achieve exceptional performance, long-term reliability, and high efficiency. It has gain and phase control and is fully hot-swappable in case of failure. It supports remote management and diagnostics via an Ethernet port to a LAN. The amplifier is available in a 40U housing that has a depth of 40 inches with an N-type (female) input connector and WR159 waveguide output interface. It requires a 3-phase AC supply of 180-260 V and consumes less than 35 kW of power.
