Embedded Microstrip Impedance Calculator

An embedded microstrip is a microstrip transmission line or flat conductor separated from the ground place via a dielectric material. There is also a dielectric material placed above the conductor. This calculator can calculate the impedance and propagation delay of the embedded microstrip. Enter the values of trace width (w), trace thickness (t), trace dielectric thickness (h), overall dielectric thickness (h1), and the dielectric constant (er). The efficiency of transmission of the embedded microstrip greatly depends on its characteristic impedance.

What is Embedded Microstrip?

Embedded Microstrip is similar to the conventional microstrip transmission line except that a dielectric substrate of known thickness and permittivity is laid on top of the conducting trace. The construction of the microstrip is similar to the construction of PCB. The conducting trace is usually made of copper of width W and thickness t routed over a ground plane that is wider than the transmission line itself and separated by a dielectric substrate of thickness H1.

Embedded microstrips are cheaper than regular antennas and consume less space. This is one of the main reasons they are widely used in smartphone applications, radars, low cost PC, video games, GPS, and many more. Because of the dielectric layer, the trace is better protected from the environment particularly from the excess moisture content where the solder mask may not provide sufficient protection. Since, surface microstrip is more difficult to calculate and maintain, it can be done efficiently because of the uniform dielectric constant above and below the conducting trace.
