The IEEE MTT/AP/EMC Joint Chapter Islamabad at Research Institute for Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Studies (RIMMS), NUST H-12 Campus has initiated a webinar series containing technical talks on RF & Microwave research area. The current talk title is “Reconfigurable MIMO Antenna Design – Recent Trends and Development”. The guest speaker is Dr. Rifaqat Hussain from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia. The abstract of the talk is as follows: Abstract: The exponential growth of wireless communication standards has brought new requirements in terms of antenna size and high data rate requirements. This attracted researcher’s attention to reconfigurable multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna designs due to their ability to adjust dynamically their frequency resonances, radiation characteristics, providing multiple functionalities and being able to adapt themselves to a changing environment. The advantages of such antenna designs include multifunctional capabilities, compact size, low front-end processing, meet high data rate requirement, avoid spectrum congestion, and operation along several frequency bands; these make them well suited for use in wireless applications such as fourth generation (4G) and fifth generation (5G) wireless standards. This talk will focus on the recent trends and development of various types of reconfigurable antennas along with MIMO operation. Furthermore, the frequency and pattern reconfigurable antennas in context of cognitive radio (CR) and 5G with massive-MIMO capabilities will be discussed in detail.
