Though taken for granted now, the ability to routinely enter almost any kind of complex circuit schematic into a circuit simulator program and get circuit performance data accurately representing the physical hardware is truly remarkable. However, one of the greatest values of computer aided engineering software is provided, not by the simulation of a static circuit with unchanging components, but by the ability to change the value of any number of circuit components interactively (in real time) while immediately observing the changes in circuit performance. Most circuit simulators provide the ability to change a component value via some kind of variable so that the effect on circuit performance can be seen without altering the original circuit. The variable(s) can be changed manually or through the program’s optimizer, where they are adjusted in an algorithm designed to automatically achieve a specified performance goal.
