L3Harris to Redesign Countermeasures Systems Used by the US Air Force

L3Harris Technologies has been selected to perform sustainment work on the AN/ALQ-172, the electronic warfare (EW) system used by the U.S. Air Force to protect B-52s and C-130s from radar-guided threats. The announcement was made during AFA Air, Space and Cyber Conference 2019, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Under the contract issued by Robins AFB, Georgia, L3Harris will redesign elements of the AN/ALQ-172 as part of wider efforts to increase the EW suite’s maintainability, reliability and effectiveness. The combat-proven system can simultaneously counter multiple pulse, continuous wave, pulse Doppler and monopulse threats. The AN/ALQ-172 is integrated with the aircraft’s cockpit controls, displays and defensive subsystem. It provides the aircrew with protection against the most sophisticated radar-directed threats.

As the B-52 continues to be the centerpiece of U.S. strategic airpower, it is essential to continually modernize its EW capabilities to ensure its ability to defeat future threats. L3Harris’ Space and Airborne Systems segment provides space payloads, sensors and full-mission solutions; classified intelligence and cyber defense; avionics; and electronic warfare solutions.
