What frequency bands have been allocated for 5G in Indonesia?
The Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Indonesia (BRTI) announced that they will start the auction for 5G spectrum in 2022. They are planning to use the 2.3 GHz (n40) band and mm-Wave spectrum - 24.25 – 27 GHz and 27 – 29.5 GHz.
In 2019, the Indonesian government was trying to roll out commercial 5G technology in 2020 but faced some hurdles, one of them being the financial capability of telecom operators. The country also doesn’t have key 5G spectrum bands available – like the 3.5 GHz (n78) band which is currently being used for FSS applications. As a result of this, they are now planning on using the 2.3 GHz (n40) and mm-Wave spectrum.
Operators like Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat Ooredoo and Hutchison 3 Indonesia (Tri) in Indonesia have conducted 5G trials in limited sets. However, for now we will have to wait and see what spectrum finally gets allocated for 5G use in the country.
