What frequency bands have been allocated to 5G in Luxembourg?
The 700 MHz (n28) and the 3600 MHz (n78) bands have been allocated for 5G in Luxembourg. They also plan to allocate the 26 GHz band (24.25 – 27.5 GHz) for 5G use sometime in 2020.
5G Bands in Luxembourg
The Luxembourg Regulatory Institute (ILR) organized an auction for the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz frequency bands on 13th July, 2020 which lasted for five days and wrapped up on 18th July, 2020 after 38 rounds of bidding.
ILR conducted a public consultation from May to July, 2019 for the distribution of the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz frequency bands. These bands were originally scheduled to be auctioned in the second half of 2019 but the auction got rescheduled to 2020.
In the 2020 auction, five operators namely Eltrona, Luxembourg Online, Orange Luxembourg, Post Luxembourg and Proximus Luxembourg participated in the bidding for 2 x 30 MHz in the 700 MHz band (n28) and 330 MHz in the 3600 MHz (n78) frequency band.
Orange, Proximus and Post each secured one of the three available lots of 2 x 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band. In the 3600 MHz band, Orange and Post were awarded with 110 MHz of spectrum while, Proximus got 100 MHz and Luxembourg Online secured only 10 MHz of spectrum. The fifth bidder, Eltrona didn’t win any spectrum in the auction.
ILR also intends to allocate the 26 GHz band (24.25 – 27.5 GHz) in the second half of 2020.
