What frequency bands have been allocated for 5G in Uruguay?
The 2.5 GHz band and 27.5-28.35 GHz (n261) band have been allocated for 5G use in Uruguay. The Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Telecomunicaciones (URSEC) and the government of Uruguay held a 5G spectrum auction for the 2.5 GHz and 27.5-28.35 GHz (n261) band in 2019.
Three operators - Antel, Telefónica’s Movistar and América Móvil’s Claro of Uruguay participated in the auction of spectrum blocks consisting of 1.8 GHz, 2.6 GHz and AWS bands (1700 MHz to 2100 MHz) which will boost 4G services and eventually be used for 5G technology.
In April 2019, the state telecom company Antel, made Uruguay one of the first five countries in the world to introduce 5G mobile broadband technology, in partnership with Nokia.
The cities of Punta Del Leste, La Barra in Maldonado and Nueva Palmira in Colonia, were the first to have the 5G technology coverage in the country.
