There are four main frequency bands dedicated to Automotive radars across the globe that include the 24 GHz and 77 Ghz bands (See the table below). However, the frequency band from 76 GHz to 81 GHz has been accepted by most countries and is the frequency band of choice for automotive radars.

Automotive Radar Frequency Bands

Frequency

Type of Band
24 GHz to 24.25 GHz250 MHzISM Band
21 GHz to 26 GHz5 GHzUWB (Ultra Wide Band)
76 GHz to 77 GHz1 GHzAutomotive LRR (Long Range Radar) Band
77 GHz to 81 GHz4 GHzAutomotive SRR (Short Range Radar) Band

In Europe, automotive radars are temporarily using the 24 GHz band, however this will be discontinued by 2022 due to spectrum regulation by the FCC (USA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

The European Commission has proposed that the internationally available 77 GHz band be used as a replacement.

The 77 GHz band has many advantages over the 24 GHz Band. Click here to see the advantages.
