Beidou is now in its 3rd phase of development (BDS-3), the BDS space constellation will gradually transition from BDS-2’s to BDS-3’s.

The basic space constellation of BDS-3 consists of 3 GEO satellites, 3 IGSO satellites, and 24 MEO satellites.

BDS-3 defines three open service signals:

  • B1C:    1575.42 MHz with a bandwidth of 32.736 MHz
  • B2a:    1176.45 MHz with  a bandwidth of 20.46 MHz
  • B3I:     1268.52 MHz with a bandwidth of 20.46 MHz

The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System or BeiDou-2 was formerly known as COMPASS. This system will consist of 35 satellites, which include 5 geostationary orbit satellites for backward compatibility with BeiDou-1, and 30 non-geostationary satellites (27 in medium Earth orbit and 3 in inclined geosynchronous orbit), that will offer complete coverage of the globe.

The BeiDou GNSS solution operates in the following frequency bands:

B1 band: 1559.05 MHz to 1563.15 MHz with a center frequency of 1561.1 MHz and a bandwidth of 4.092 MHz
B2 band: 1195.14 MHz to 1219.14 MHz with a center frequency of 1207.14 MHz and a bandwidth of 24 MHz
B3 band: 1256.52 MHz to 1280.52 MHz with a center frequency of 1268.52 MHz and a bandwidth of 24 MHz
