SMPM stands for “Sub-Miniature Push-on Micro” and is a type of blind-mate, push-on connector that is similar to SMP connectors. These connectors can go by many other names. It was introduced by the Gilbert company (now Corning Gilbert) as GPPO (Gilbert Precision Push-On) connectors. They are also called SSMP (Sub-small Solder Mount Push-on). SMPM connectors adhere to MIL-STD-348 specifications from 328-1 through -3.
SMPM connectors have an interface diameter that is 33% smaller than SMP connectors and operate from DC to 65 GHz compared to SMP which can operate at frequencies up to 40 GHz. The characteristics of SMPM make them an ideal choice when dealing with applications that require high precision and high density. RF projects involving analysis, lab equipment, or automated test and instrumentation can rely on the high frequency range of the SMPM connector. In Mil-Aero and Defense applications, projects like phased array radars or board-to-board functions are considered high-density applications with limited surface area for connectors. Here SMPM’s reduced footprint proves to be extremely useful.
The popularity and versatility of the SMPM connector have carried through to many applications. They are now included as PCB Surface Mount and Edge Launch connectors, female-to-female bullets, in VITA 67.3 products etc. there is also another version of SMPM connectors available called Threaded SMPM connectors that have the same small form factor and higher frequency but add a threaded coupling nut to more reliably secure the connector to its mate.
