In-band full-duplex (IBFD) wireless technology allows a wireless terminal to transmit and receive simultaneously in the same frequency band, increasing the throughput of wireless communication systems and networks. This air interface technique addresses the key challenges of next generation (5G) mobile networks such as throughput, spectral efficiency, latency and connectivity.
The biggest hurdle in the implementation of IBFD technology is self-interference, i.e., the interference caused by the transmit signal to the received signal. Some companies use self-interference canceling front-ends or duplexers for avoiding self-interference.
The IBFD air interface technology has been successfully validated by researchers for both the network and the physical layer.
