What is the MIL-DTL-3922 standard? Who uses it?
MIL-DTL-3922 is a U.S. military specification that outlines general requirements for waveguide flanges. It specifies fabrication material, design, interface and physical dimensions, threaded parts, cap screws, hexagon nuts, plating, surface roughness, marking, workmanship, and packaging. Waveguide flanges are connectors used to mechanically and electrically couple two sections of waveguides or waveguide parts to each other.
Manufacturers (contractors) supplying waveguide flanges to U.S. military applications must meet all the requirements specified in the MIL-DIL-3922 to ensure that their products function reliably and can withstand the harsh environmental conditions found in military operations.
According to the MIL-DTL-3922 standard, the contractor must submit waveguide flanges (as specified in this document) for inspection and verification. This document also contains details regarding materials inspection and conformance inspection, including the methods of examination and test (e.g., visual and mechanical examination) used to verify whether the submitted samples meet all requirements specified in this standard. If the samples meet all the requirements of MIL-DTL-3922, the contractor is authorized to supply waveguide flanges for U.S. military applications.
The purpose of the standard is to ensure that the waveguide flange products supplied to the U.S. military are military-unique and can operate reliably, withstanding the harsh conditions found in military environments. This military standard is used by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. It is revised periodically, and MIL-DTL-3922 Revision E (w/AMENDMENT 1, dated 10 September 2021) is the current revision (As of October 2024).
