Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) is a technology that uses magnets to automatically align the wireless charging transmitter and receiver coils perfectly before wirelessly transferring power. This reduces losses caused due to misalignment and improves charging efficiency. MPP technology  MPP was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and introduced in January 2023. It is a key element of Qi 2.0 (Qi2), the next generation of the Qi wireless charging standard.

The major issue with wireless charging in Qi 1.0 was that the transfer of power only works properly if the two copper coils are very close to each other. The rate of transfer decreases significantly if they are not appropriately aligned. This means that Qi charging doesn't always work efficiently and that the charging rate can change depending on where you place the phone on the charger. Qi2’s MPP technology aims to fix this problem by using magnets to keep the phone and charger optimally positioned. This will make charging more efficient and increase the speed at which a phone charges.

This boost in power will also open up the possibilities for charging larger devices, such as tablets and laptops, in addition to smartphones and wearables. With higher power levels, devices can charge more rapidly, reducing overall charging times and improving user convenience.

MPP can also help prolong the life of the battery. When the coils are not perfectly aligned, some electromagnetic energy is lost during the charging process. This energy is then converted to heat, which can harm the health of the battery.

WPC member, Apple, provided the basis for the new Qi2 standard building with its MagSafe technology. Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile will ensure that phones or other rechargeable battery-powered mobile products are perfectly aligned with charging devices, thus providing improved energy efficiency and faster charging.
