ETS-Lindgren Completes 20 Years of Technical Contributions to Wireless Industry Standards

In the late 1990s, ETS-Lindgren (then EMC Test Systems) first started working with one of the wireless industry certification programs administered by CTIA (and now by a separate LLC, CTIA Certification), working on projects with Nokia, Motorola, and Cingular to develop test plans to verify the performance of wireless devices. At the time, having completed over 10,000 installations of RF shielded enclosures worldwide, ETS-Lindgren leveraged its expertise in EMC testing and measurement to advance the development of new test environments and methodologies for wireless devices.

ETS-Lindgren worked with CTIA to develop an early methodology Method of Measurement for Radiated RF Power & Receiver Performance, along with a team of engineers representing test labs, carriers and manufacturers. Now known as the Test Plan for Wireless Device Over-the-Air Performance, it has evolved through the years and continues unto day as an important tool. ETS-Lindgren was also an active technical contributor to the Effective Radiated Power (ERP) Ad-Hoc Group, an early working group within the CTIA Certification Program created to develop a radiated test plan. As a result of its greater involvement in the development of wireless test methods and environments as well as related standards, ETS-Lindgren formally joined CTIA in the early 2000s.

Fast-forward to 2021 with the formation of CTIA Certification's new website, www.ctiacertification.org. The site features details on each of the 7 CTIA Certification programs in the areas of device certification and supply chain.  The certifications are the direct result of the expertise and dedication of many engineers – across many market segments – over many decades.

"We are very happy to see the way CTIA Certification has worked hand-in-hand with industry to address the explosive advances in wireless technology. It's been a challenge to keep up with the rapidly developing technology while addressing the needs of carriers, manufacturers and users, but CTIA Certification has set a great example of how this can be accomplished," said Bruce Butler, President of ETS-Lindgren. "I'm very proud of our membership in CTIA and the technical contributions our engineers have made to the success of CTIA's certification programs since we first got involved over 20 years ago. We wish CTIA Certification continued success in 2021 and beyond!"

ETS-Lindgren designed, manufactured and installed the world's first CTIA Certification OTA Authorized Test Lab in 2002. Since then, their contributions to CTIA Certification and industry standards organizations have continued to result in many "industry first" efforts that advanced the technology for wireless device testing and measurement. Latest technical advancements include dozens of customized 5G NR test systems to meet specific user requirements.
