Empower RF Systems Introduces Scalable 40 kW GaN Pulsed Transmitter from 1 to 2 GHz

Empower RF Systems, a leader in high power amplifier solutions for reliable communications, defense, and industrial applications, has introduced the Model 2237 – a high performance, liquid cooled, pulsed transmitter operating from 1 to 2 GHz. Model 2237 is designed to provide maximum waveform flexibility in L-Band radar, test, and EW applications.

The 2237 comprises of multi-drawer integrated liquid-cooled subsystems to produce up to 40 kW peak pulsed output power. Each of the amplifier subsystem drawer features multiple high power GaN on SiC devices that provide wide frequency response, high gain, high peak power capability and low distortions. Exceptional performance, long-term reliability and high efficiency are achieved by employing advanced broadband RF matching networks and combining techniques, EMI/RFI filters, and all qualified components. Each drawer is a full gain PA with integrated single phase power supply and liquid cooling. It features gain and phase control and is fully hot swappable in case of failure.

The 2237 transmitter layout consists of a system controller in a 3U 19-inch rack unit and 16 hot-swappable 2U amplifier drawers with each amplifier drawer containing an integrated power supply in its 2U chassis. There is no separate system level power supply. This arrangement eliminates the risk of an RF section or single power supply failure taking the entire amplifier offline. In the event of an RF pallet or PA booster failure only a fractional reduction of output power is realized, and the amplifier system remains on air. These Fast Field Replaceable (FFR) drawers allow hot or muted swapping with less than 15 minutes MTTR. The result is a system with extreme Effective MTBF.

Breakthrough in Complex Waveform Handling

Sophisticated digital input and output RF detection algorithms measure Peak, RMS, and Envelope. Digital processing of the detectors allows capabilities not previously found on COTS pulse amplifiers:

  • Random Pulse Widths and Duty Cycles
  • 500KHz PRFs and 10% Duty Cycle
  • 200ns to 500usec Pulse Widths
  • Droop Correction Option Available
  • Optional Capability for Digitally Modulated Signals on the Pulse Carrier

The 2237 is another variation of Empower’s Gen3 platform and the deployment of 2237, along with the previously announced 2244, further solidifies the solid state, high power, liquid cooled L-Band product baseline that has been developed. This new modern architecture offers scalability for affordable upgrade paths to future power needs by adding hardware to an existing system.
