ETS-Lindgren announced its technical contributions to AMTA 2023, the annual Meeting and Symposium of the Antenna Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA). The symposium, hosted by The Boeing Company and co-hosted by ETS-Lindgren, is held in person from October 8 to 13 at the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington in Renton, Washington, ideally located south of Seattle. ETS-Lindgren’s contributions include presentations and research papers on varied topics documenting the company’s expertise in Wireless, Over-the-Air (OTA), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), and Radio Frequency (RF)/Microwave Test and Measurement System Solutions.
The presentations contributed by ETS-Lindgren began with the popular “Boot Camp” on Sunday, October 8, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. This program addressed the fundamentals of RF and antenna-related measurements with lectures complemented by live demonstrations. ETS-Lindgren’s Zhong Chen, Chief Engineer, spoke on and demonstrated “EMI/EMC Measurements.”
Research paper contributions by ETS-Lindgren:
- Monday, October 9, Session 3: Standards and Characterization, from 1:30 to 3:10 p.m. From 2:10 to 2:30 p.m., Mr. Chen presented the paper “Progress on the Development of IEEE Std 1128 - Recommended Practice on Absorber Evaluation.” Co-authored by Vince Rodriguez of AMETEK / NSI-MI Technologies and Lars Foged of MVG, the paper provides an update of this standard, which has been used widely for absorber evaluations in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) applications as well as in antenna and microwave measurement applications. Proposed changes noted in the paper include extending the upper-frequency limit to 40 GHz and possibly beyond. Mr. Chen is chair of the working group developing the new edition of this standard.
- Tuesday, October 10, Session 5: Imaging, Algorithms, and Processing Techniques, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. From 8:30 to 8:50 am, Mr. Chen presented the paper “Novel Application of Compressed Sensing in Cylindrical Mode Filtering for Far-Field Antenna Measurements,” co-authored by Stuart Gregson of Next Phase Measurements and ETS-Lindgren’s Yibo Wang, RF Engineer. Later in this session, from 8:50 to 9:10 am, Mr. Wang presented the paper “A Novel Data Processing Technique for Calibrating Low-Frequency Antennas with Long Ring Down Time in An Extrapolation Range,” co-authored by Mr. Chen as well as Wayne Cooper and Dennis Lewis of The Boeing Company.
- Thursday, October 12, Session 14: Range Design, Instrumentation, and Characterization, from 10:00 to 11:40 a.m. From 10:00 to 10:20 am, Kefeng Liu, Consultant with ETS-Lindgren, presented the paper “A Unique Spherical Near-Field Test System for Commercial Aircraft Radar Radome Testing.” Co-authors include Anbang Liu of MJK Electronic Engineering and Mr. Lewis.
During the annual AMTA Awards Banquet on Wednesday, October 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., ETS-Lindgren was recognized with several awards. “We are honored that Zhong Chen will be recognized with the 2023 AMTA Edmond S. Gillespie Fellow Award for his significant technical contributions through publications,” said Ms. O’Neil. “Zhong joins other industry experts receiving this prestigious award in 2023, including Joshua A. Gordon with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Justin Dobbins with Raytheon, and Francesco Saccardi with MVG.” ETS-Lindgren will also be honored with the Outstanding Service Award in recognition of its dedicated contributions as the AMTA 2023 Symposium Co-Host.
In addition to their industry-leading Extra-High Performance Microwave Absorber and the popular Model 3164-08, Open-Boundary Quad-Ridged Horn Antenna, they also showcased Model AMS-5709 – the latest test environment in ETS-Lindgren’s family of Antenna Measurement Systems. This MIMO OTA Test System allows repeatable measurements of the radiated performance of millimeter wave wireless devices and chipsets in a simulated multi-path environment to emulate real-world conditions for debugging and performance verification.
Model AMS-5709 supports a generation of spatial field structures similar to those seen in a wide variety of scenarios found in everyday life. Standard conducted channel models can be adapted to equivalent radiated spatial channel models for evaluation of the entire device signal chain including antennas as well as device platform on device performance. Visitors to ETS-Lindgren’s Booth #704 can witness a live demonstration of Model AMS-5709 and learn about the optional test packages available to evaluate downlink FR2 MIMO performance and FR2 MIMO antenna design.
